What to Know Before Moving to Salt Lake City

It is not any surprise that Salt Lake City Utah is the most populated city in Utah. The city is home to approximately 200,000 residents.  However, the Salt Lake City metro area has closer to 1.2 million people.  The city is known for its great quality of life, friendly people, and over 200 sunny days per year.  

If you are thinking about making a move or relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah knowing the pros and cons of this city may be helpful in your decision.

To begin with, Salt Lake City, Utah is known for offering a great quality of life. The city offers many public transportation options, amenities, restaurants, shops, conveniences, and friendly residence. It is not uncommon to be walking in downtown Temple Square and have people look, smile, or even wave at you! 

The city is surrounded by majestic mountains and filled with natural beauty.  There are numerous outdoor activities including, hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, paved walking trails and so much more. The accessibility to a variety of national parks is phenomenal. Salt Lake City Utah is three-four hours away from Zions National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, the Grand Tetons National Park, and Yellowstone National park.

Let’s talk about the weather and natural disasters in Utah.  Salt Lake City is known for its hot summer days and cooler mornings.  July, August, and September are typically the hottest months in Salt Lake City Utah with highs averaging in the low 90’s.  You can expect cold winters with a good amount of snow in the mountains. Although there are many cold and often below freezing days in the winter, you can still expect many sunny days.  In the spring, SLC sees temperatures average 60 degrees as the high and the lows in the mid-30’s. Fall offers gorgeous foliage with weather in the 70’s and lows in the 40’s. Utah has low humidity and therefore is a fairly dry state.  Salt Lake City rarely experiences tornadoes and earthquakes.  However, because it sits in a valley it is at risk for wildfires and flooding. 

Regarding schools and universities, Utah has a strong education system and there are many great universities in Salt Lake City and in the surrounding cities.  Some of the most well known universities are The University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, Weber State and Utah State.

Utah is experiencing a thriving economy and there are an abundance of great job opportunities throughout many industries.  The state ranks second nationally for job creation. Salt Lake City is appealing to employers because of its strong labor force. The 2.9% unemployment is well below the 3.7% national average, which makes it an ideal city for job-seekers. Some of the largest employers in the state of Utah include Adobe, Delta Airlines, doTerra, Ebay Inc, Goldman Sachs, JetBlue Airways Corporation, Intermountain Healthcare Medical Center, Overstock.com Inc, and the University of Utah.

Salt Lake City is experiencing a large real estate housing boom.  Real estate owners have seen huge increases in equity gains in their properties.  The median home value is $543,774 in March 2022 and Utah home values have risen 29.9% over the past year. 

Salt Lake City is within an hour's distance of nine world class ski resorts. Utah is famous for its incredible ski resorts and provides epic winter experiences for skiing and snowboarding.  Utah attracts tourists from all across the globe who are wanting that sensational winter ski and snowboard experience.  Winter sports are a large part of the state's economy, however, it is also extremely popular with the locals who thrive with this active lifestyle.

Utah is home to the Silicone Slopes in Lehi, Utah.  The Silicon Slopes began as a reference to the area surrounding Lehi, Utah where dozens of tech start-ups are located. It has now embodied the entire startup and technology ecosystem of Utah.  The Salt Lake City International Airport is less than a two-hour flight from Silicon Valley, in California. The Silicon Slopes has a large number of technology centers and communities and is gaining recognition from their similarity with Silicon Valley in California.

As you can see, it is no surprise that so many people are moving to the Beehive State of Utah.
